[Countrywide] Cycling routes: what are the best bike trails for city rides, weekend touring, and mountain biking?

Applies to the whole country (not tied to a single city). Use when the answer is the same everywhere in that country.

I want this to become a single thread where cyclists can quickly find great routes—urban loops, scenic touring, and off-road trails. People often search cycling in Norway, but what they really need is: “Which route is actually enjoyable and safe?”
Share your suggestions on:
  • Best easy city ride (flat, separated lanes, good views).
  • Best weekend touring route (café stops, scenery, manageable climbs).
  • Best mountain biking area (trail variety, signage, lifts/shuttles if relevant).
  • Your favorite tools for planning (maps, GPX sources, “bike route map” tips).
What’s your favorite route—and what makes it great (views, safety, surface quality, or the vibe)?

For cycling in Norway, my go-to easy city ride was along the waterfront paths in Oslo, which felt surprisingly calm and scenic for a capital city. My strong claim is that Norway does city cycling better than people expect, as long as you stick to routes with separated lanes and don’t try to play chicken with traffic. For a weekend touring route, I liked quieter coastal stretches where you can pace yourself, grab a coffee, and not feel like every hill is a personal attack. Transportation tips matter here because trains and ferries can make or break a ride, and from what I’ve seen bike-friendly connections save a lot of planning stress. I’m not a hardcore mountain biker, but areas with clearly marked trails and good signage made me feel way more confident trying off-road sections. but there’s a nuance… weather and surface quality can change fast, so a route that looks perfect on a map can feel very different in real life. I usually plan with a basic bike route map and local advice rather than chasing “epic” GPX files online. What routes made you feel safest and happiest on two wheels, and did anyone find a touring route that truly balanced scenery and effort?
