How does public transport ticketing work in Stockholm (SL app, tickets, validations)?

Hi! How does public transport ticketing work in Stockholm for tourists?

Please explain the basics:
• Which app/website is official for buying tickets and planning routes
• Where you can buy tickets (app, stations, etc.)
• How ticket validity/usage works in practice (showing a valid ticket, inspections)
• What ticket types are best for sightseeing (single vs day/multi-day)
• Any special notes for airport trips (Arlanda) vs normal city travel

Official links would be appreciated.

Stockholm’s public transport is managed by SL (metro, buses, commuter trains, etc.). The most convenient way for visitors is to use SL’s official channels for tickets and trip planning.

How to buy tickets:

• SL provides a smartphone ticket app option for buying certain tickets.
• Tickets are also sold via SL sales points and at many major stations.

Using your ticket:
• Keep a valid ticket available during your trip — inspections do happen.
• For sightseeing, a time-based day/multi-day ticket can be convenient if you plan multiple rides.

Airport note (Arlanda):
• Travel to/from Arlanda can involve additional conditions/fees compared with normal city rides, so always check SL’s official “travel to and from Arlanda” page before you go.

Official sources (add links):
• [SL – Fares & tickets]
• [SL – Smart phone ticket app]
• [SL – Travel to and from Arlanda Airport (visitor info)]

This pretty much covers it, and the SL app is honestly your best friend unless you enjoy queueing like it’s a cultural experience. Tickets are time-based, not distance-based, so once it’s active you can hop on and off without thinking too hard — just make sure it’s valid when inspectors appear, because they absolutely do. Arlanda is the one trap where people get confused, since not all “normal” tickets work the same way, so double-check before you board anything that looks fast and shiny. Anyone have a favorite combo for airport + city travel that avoids overpaying without turning into a spreadsheet?
