[Countrywide] “Red houses & fishing vibe” islands: where are the most photogenic coastal communities (without the biggest crowds)?

Applies to the whole country (not tied to a single city). Use when the answer is the same everywhere in that country.

I want to collect recommendations for islands/coastal communities that feel like classic postcard harbors—red houses, boats, and a real fishing vibe—without turning into a queue of tripods.

If you’ve been to a great place, please share:
  • What made it special (harbor layout, views, walkability, atmosphere)
  • Best time to visit (early morning vs evening, weekday vs weekend)
  • Whether it’s worth staying overnight or just a stop
  • Any etiquette notes (private property, docks, locals working)
Which island/community gave you the best “postcard harbor” feeling—and how did you avoid the crowds?

For that red houses and fishing vibe without the tripod traffic, I loved smaller Lofoten villages away from the headline stops, like Nusfjord early in the morning from what I’ve seen. My strong claim is that the most photogenic harbors are almost always local favorites you reach slightly before coffee time, not the ones with souvenir signs pointing the way. What made it special was how compact the harbor felt, with boats actually coming and going and houses you could admire without feeling like you were trespassing on someone’s Instagram set. Early morning on a weekday was magic, and by late afternoon it already felt busier, even if not full-on crowded. I think it’s worth staying overnight if you can, because evenings and mornings bookend the day with totally different light and moods. Etiquette matters here: don’t wander onto docks unless you’re sure they’re public, and remember people are working, not posing. but there’s a nuance… some of these places are becoming popular precisely because they’re beautiful, so you still need to adjust expectations and timing. Which coastal community gave you that real postcard feeling, and did you find mornings or evenings worked better to avoid crowds?
