[Countrywide] Scenic ferry crossings: which ferry ride is the experience itself (best views, best deck time, best timing)?

Applies to the whole country (not tied to a single city). Use when the answer is the same everywhere in that country.

Some ferry crossings feel like a mini-cruise: cliffs, fjords, islands, changing light — and the ride itself becomes a highlight.
Let’s collect the best ones and the practical advice that makes them enjoyable.

Please share:
  • Which crossing you loved (route/area) and what made it special
  • How long it takes and whether it’s better as a short “scenic break” or a key route
  • Best deck strategy: where to stand/sit for the best views
  • Booking reality in peak season, and any “arrive early” advice
  • Weather tips: how to stay warm and still enjoy the ride
What ferry ride gave you the most memorable views — and what’s your #1 comfort tip?

For scenic ferry crossings that feel like the trip, not just transport, the Geiranger–Hellesylt ferry is still undefeated in my book, especially if you snag deck time and let the fjord do its slow, dramatic reveal. It’s about an hour, perfect as a scenic break, and from what I’ve seen the best views are mid-ride when the cliffs close in and waterfalls start flexing like they know you’re watching. Arrive early in high season unless you enjoy standing behind tour groups, and bring layers because “sunny” on a fjord still means cold wind with opinions. What ferry ride topped this for you, or is this one of those rare cases where the classic really does win?
