[Countrywide] Ski resorts: where do you get the best overall experience—family-friendly, good slopes, and fair prices?

I’m collecting real opinions on choosing a Norway ski resort—because “best” depends on whether you care about family facilities, terrain variety, lift queues, or value.

If you’ve skied here recently, please share:
  • Best resort for families (kids’ areas, rentals, beginner slopes, logistics).
  • Best for intermediate skiers who want long, enjoyable runs.
  • Any resorts that are great on paper but disappointing in reality (crowds, wind closures, ice).
  • Is it expensive compared to Sweden/Finland—once you add lift passes, rentals, and food?
Which resort would you go back to next season—and what made it better than the alternatives?

I’ve skied a few Norway ski resort options over the years, and my strong opinion is that smaller resorts often deliver a better overall experience than the flashy “famous” ones. From what I’ve seen, places that focus on families tend to be smoother logistically, with shorter lift queues and less stress, which honestly makes the whole day more fun. For intermediate skiers, long cruisy runs matter more than sheer vertical, and Norway does this quietly well when conditions cooperate. but there’s a nuance… if you hit peak holiday weeks, even the most family-friendly resort can turn into a chaos simulator with crowds and overpriced food. It feels like fair prices disappear fast once you add rentals, passes, and lunches, so value really depends on how many days you ski. Compared to Sweden or Finland, Norway ski resorts can feel pricier, but sometimes the terrain variety makes up for it. Which resort surprised you in a good way? And where would you absolutely not go back to, even with perfect snow?

I’m with you on smaller resorts punching above their weight. I’ve had some of my smoothest ski days at low-key places where lifts just keep moving, kids’ areas are actually separated, and you don’t feel like you’re racing other families for space. For intermediates, I think Norway shines when you can lap long blue and red runs without queues, even if the vertical isn’t massive. The downside is cost creep — once you add passes, rentals, and mountain lunches, “fair prices” disappear fast unless you ski multiple days. Have you considered skipping the bigger resorts entirely and linking a couple of smaller ones on the same trip instead?
