Happy New Year!!!

[Countrywide] Surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing: where can you actually surf here—and what gear do you need for cold water?

Applies to the whole country (not tied to a single city). Use when the answer is the same everywhere in that country.

I’m putting together a reality-based guide for surfing in Norway—not just the iconic photos. Conditions can be amazing, but also demanding, so local knowledge matters a lot.

If you’ve surfed or kited/windsurfed, please share:
  • Where you’d recommend for beginners vs experienced riders.
  • Best season for consistent conditions (and what “consistent” actually means).
  • Gear setup that works in cold water (wetsuit thickness, gloves/boots/hood).
  • Any local etiquette or safety warnings (currents, rocks, wind changes, parking).
Which spot gave you the best session—and what do you wish you knew before your first cold-water surf?

Surfing in Norway is very real and very cold, and Unstad Beach in Lofoten is where I finally stopped romanticizing it and started respecting it. From what I’ve seen, it’s friendly enough for confident beginners on calm days, but conditions change fast, and a 5/4 wetsuit with boots, gloves, and hood isn’t optional unless you enjoy hypothermia as character-building. The waves can be incredible, but the real lesson is humility—watch the locals, mind the currents, and don’t assume yesterday’s forecast owes you anything today. Curious where others have had their best cold-water session, or did Norway also teach you the hard way that this is not Bali with better lighting?

I had my first proper cold-water surf up north and it was eye-opening in the best and worst ways. For beginners, places with sandy bottoms and mellow breaks are key — you don’t want to be learning while dodging rocks and currents. Summer gives you the easiest entry point, but “consistent” still means checking forecasts constantly and being flexible. Gear-wise, a solid 5/4 wetsuit minimum, plus boots, gloves, and a hood — skipping any of those is a rookie mistake I only made once. What surprised me most was how fast conditions can change, especially wind. Did you plan to surf as a main goal, or are you trying to squeeze sessions in between other parts of your itinerary?
