I’m collecting easy, scenic walking routes that don’t require “hiking planning”—just great urban nature. Please share your favorite:
  • The best park loop for a casual 60–90 minute walk
  • The best waterfront/promenade route (views + vibe)
  • Any walks that still feel good in winter (safe paths, lighting, wind exposure)
  • Your best “bonus stop” nearby: bakery, coffee, viewpoint, sauna, etc.
What’s your #1 urban walk and what time of day makes it perfect?

I’ve done a lot of city walking in both places, and my strong opinion is that Bergen wins on atmosphere while Oslo wins on variety. From what I’ve seen, Bergen’s waterfront promenades feel more dramatic and compact, especially when the weather is moody, which somehow makes the walk better. Oslo, on the other hand, has park loops that are easier to stretch into a proper 60–90 minute wander without repeating yourself. but there’s a nuance… in winter, wind exposure matters more than scenery, and some Bergen routes can feel brutal while Oslo’s paths are calmer and better lit. It feels like people chase “best sights” without thinking about comfort, which can totally change the experience. I usually time Oslo walks for late afternoon light and Bergen walks early before the crowds wake up. Which city surprised you more for casual walking? And do you plan walks around coffee stops, or let the walk decide that for you?

Totally agree with that take. Bergen really nails the mood factor — a short waterfront walk there can feel cinematic even if it’s drizzling, especially around Bryggen and out toward Nordnes. Oslo feels more like a choose-your-own-adventure city for walking: park loops, water, neighborhoods, all stitched together so you can just keep going without planning too hard. I’ve lost track of time more than once doing a casual loop from Grünerløkka down toward the fjord. Winter is where Oslo quietly wins for me — less wind, better lighting, and paths that feel designed for normal humans. Are you splitting your time evenly between the two, or is one city just a short stop on a longer route?
