Countdown to the New Year:

Happy New Year!!!

[Countrywide] One “must-do” hike: which trail would you recommend to a Nordic visitor, and what season is best?

Applies to the whole country (not tied to a single city). Use when the answer is the same everywhere in that country.

I want this to become a single, high-signal thread where people can choose a hike that matches their level and season in Norway—without keyword-stuffing or Instagram hype. If you’re recommending a trail, could you include:
  • Difficulty level (and what makes it hard: exposure, length, elevation, terrain)
  • Best season and typical conditions
  • Logistics: best base town, transport, start time, crowds
  • One safety tip you wish you’d known earlier
If you could recommend only one hike to a Scandinavian friend, which trail wins—and why that one?

If I had to pick one hike for a Nordic visitor, I’d say Trolltunga, even though everyone loves to roll their eyes at it, because from what I’ve seen it really does deliver some of Norway’s best sights in one brutal-but-rewarding package. The difficulty isn’t technical, but the length and exposure make it a full commitment day, so this isn’t something you casually squeeze in between brunch plans. Late June to early September felt like the safest window, with fewer sketchy snow patches and long daylight that buys you margin. Logistics are straightforward if you base yourself near Odda and start early, and transportation tips here are simple: earlier bus equals fewer crowds and less stress. My safety lesson was bringing more food than I thought I’d need, because bonking that far out is not cute. but there’s a nuance… if you hate crowds or long slogs, this hike can feel more like endurance theater than joy, and there are quieter trails with just as much drama. Still, if I could only recommend one hike to make someone say “okay, now I get Norway,” this would be it. Curious if anyone thinks a less famous trail beats this on pure experience, or does the classic win for a reason?

I get why Trolltunga keeps winning these debates, but I think it really comes down to matching the hike to how much time and energy someone actually has. As a “must-do,” it’s impressive because the payoff is undeniable, but the length turns it into an endurance event rather than a scenic stroll. For visitors used to Nordic terrain, that’s usually fine, but weather windows and an early start matter way more than people expect. I’d also flag that logistics around transport and parking can quietly add stress if you haven’t planned ahead. That’s why I sometimes suggest alternatives like Besseggen or a shorter fjord hike if someone’s trip is tight. They still feel distinctly Norwegian without eating an entire day. Are you building this hike into a longer road trip, or trying to slot it into a short base stay near one town?
