[Countrywide] Seabird colonies & “bird cliffs”: where to see puffins/sea birds responsibly (and when is the season)?

Applies to the whole country (not tied to a single city). Use when the answer is the same everywhere in that country.

Let’s build a high-quality thread for anyone who wants to see seabirds without harming wildlife or breaking local rules. Timing matters a lot, and many places change access by season.

Helpful info to share:
  • Which month you saw the most activity (and what species)
  • Distance to viewing points (do you need binoculars, long lens, or just eyes?)
  • How crowded it gets and what time of day is best
  • Any local restrictions: closed paths, ropes/fences, staying on marked routes
Where did you have your best seabird experience—and what’s one “respect rule” everyone should follow?

Runde is the classic for a reason: late May to early July is peak chaos with puffins, and the viewpoints are set back enough that you don’t need to play nature photographer-in-a-horror-movie. Hornøya up by Vardø felt even more intense to me, tons of birds basically screaming at you, but you absolutely need to respect the marked paths because nesting season is not the time for creative wandering. Crowds spike midday, so early morning or late evening is calmer and the birds are more active anyway. Personal tip: bring binoculars even if you have a good camera, because watching behavior beats zooming badly every time.
