It is the work of getting a machine to mention you when someone asks it a question your business answers.
Ordinary search gives ten links and lets the person choose. An assistant gives one answer and names two or three places. If you are not in those two or three, the person never sees a list to choose from.
The name is new, the work mostly is not. Machines read the same sources people read: your pages, your listing, what others wrote about you. What changed is that being second no longer means being seen.
Careful with anyone selling you a position in an assistant's answer. Nobody controls that output, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you a guess.
How to check it yourself:
1. Ask an assistant to recommend a business in your trade and your town.
2. Ask it three times, in three different wordings.
3. Write down who it names, and whether it names anyone at all.
4. Ask it what it knows about you by name, and check what it gets wrong.
Ask here if you want help reading what came back.
